I am having a hard time picking the type of music to play during the cocktail hour and then during dinner at my wedding reception. My fiance and I are both 23 and love oldies, classic rock, and old and new country. However, I do not think you can mix all of those types of music together. Anyone have any suggestions???? My wedding is in 2 1/2 weeks.

It's TOTALLY fine to have a wide mixture of genres for the reception music. Most people will do this.

My man and I have an extremely wide range of music that we like. We're playing everything from contemporary christian to rap, from old country to rock and roll.

We're renting our own music equipment, so we're in charge of organizing all the music. We loaded up our iPod specifically for the wedding reception. Hundreds of songs, and many, many minutes of downloading!

Here's a tiny sample of what our list consists of:

Beyonce - Crazy in Love

Bob Marley - Red Red Wine

Bob Seger - Old Time Rock and Roll

George Thourogood - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer

Gwen Stefani - Hollaback Girl

Jamiroquai - Little L

Kid Rock - All Summer Long

Lady Gaga - Poker Face

Lynark Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Cadillac Ranch

R. Kelly - Ignition

Ram Jam - Black Betty

Run DMC - It's Tricky

Sweet - Little Willy

The Rolling Stones - Brown Suger

Tom Jones - Sex Bomb

Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music

We've got TONS more on top of this. My dad loves the oldies, so we made sure to include a ton of that, and my husband really likes rap so we've even got some Tu Pac in there.

You definetly WANT to have a mix of types of music for a reception. Helps keep everyone happy!

Sure you can. Just pick songs or groups that have a similar sound. The most important thing about the cocktail hour music that I've noticed is the volume, not the songs themselves as long as the songs aren't possibly objectionable. It's supposed to be background music, unlike when the dance floor is open and music is the focus. As long as the music is at background volume, I would put together the music you and your fiance enjoy. After all, your wedding is supposed to be about the two of you isn't it? I would think carefully about song selection though. I will never forget the look of horror on the faces of the older crowd (65+) at a friends wedding when they realized the cocktail hour music was saying "*****, Slut, Hoe, etc..." They had just given the DJ a list of albums to pull from, and forgot to mention that he shouldn't play certain tracks. Whoops...

Reign In Blood (Whole album)...LOL only kidding having same problem as you for next year....We are having 'Nothing Else Matters' played somewhere during the reception....& other favourite ballads that I like (& amazingly my other half does) Hold On My Heart (WASP) or So Far Away (Nickelback) & we (yep even a metalhead like me) have a soft spot for Country Music- I.E. Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Garth Brooks & Kenny Chesney, so quite a bit to narrow it down to, but with having a reception, even with it being your day, you sometimes have to balance it out & have most of the evening with something your guests can dance to I'm afraid!!....All the Best.

Absolutely you can mix different types of music together. Just tell the DJ to bring a wide selection.

If you're having a professional dj, they mix those genres and more seamlessly all the time.
