Question:
Chair covers/Overlays?
2008-02-25 10:29:16 UTC
We're having a pretty casual reception. It's at a hotel (Hilton), and we're having a band. It's a fun band; not the $10,000 wedding band I wanted (before I found out the price!). So, will it look too formal (out of place) to have chair covers w/ sashes? Otherwise, maybe just an overlay and nice centerpiece on the tables. I showed my dad a picture of a banquet room w/ chair covers/sashes and he said it looked too formal. So he is biased...it's his money. What do you think? http://www.munkeboelinens.com/ Scroll down to bottom to before and after picture. Which do you think would be best for casual reception? Only formal thing about my wedding is the bridal party's attire.

My wedding had 32 guests TOTAL! And that included me and my husband. However, we did get chair covers. Our tables (overlay & chair covers) looked exactly like the black and white themed ones on your link.

I'll tell you what...it made a world of difference!!! My mother was skeptical of me getting chair covers, so was my fiance, but after I got them and we all saw how beautiful the reception room was, it was SOOO worth it! They both apologized later for doubting me. *laughs*

If your father is the one paying for the covers, look around your area (on the internet) for a good priced rental company. Even those (home-based) companies. Just make sure you ask them questions like (delivery fees, pick-up/drop off, ironing before delivery, etc. etc.). If anything, show him the link below so he gets an idea of what somehting as simple as chair covers and overlays can do to a room.

Also remember, that he is a guy and paying for the wedding, so he may be a little frugal at times and not really understand decorating. I know my husband didn't get it at first. But I'm sure if you show him the effort of you getting prices from different companies, to save him money, he'll take more consideration.

Hi. Why do you think the HIlton isn't nice and fancy? Sounds nice to me. Fancy doesn't mean you have to have the $10,000 band....it's all in presentation! The Hiltons are nice!

Yes, if you can afford it...I love the look of the table linens and the overlays, the chair covers AND the sashes!

Again, if you can afford it, I would get them. It would set the elegance of the reception. If you don't want the expense....then the "before" picture is OK too.

Chair covers are stupid and expensive. You'd be much better off using the money for nicer food.

No, the Hilton's rooms are pretty nice so I think the chair covers would fit right in. If you like them maybe you can offer to spring for them since he's footing the rest of the bill. Make sure to check with the hotel because I am having reception in a hotel ballroom and they provide the chair covers if you want them, you can't bring your own.

What is it that makes your reception so casual? Its in a hotel, youre having dinner and dancing right? I think the covers are nice and kicks it up a notch. Especially if you use a bright playful color bow. The black bows are a bit too formal looking.

We are having our wedding at a hotel and my fiance at first did not thing spending $400 on chair covers was worth it until he along with his parents and mine saw how hideous the chair looks bare. We are not having a band just a dj but I still want my guest to feel like "wow" when they walk in.

Wow a Hilton and a band doesn't sound casual to me, lol! But seriously, if you want to covers go for it. I didn't have them, and I really don't think anyone noticed.

If your dad doesnt want the chair covers and you really do, then why dont you pay for that part of the wedding.

If you don't opt to do the whole chair cover thing, maybe just get some pretty flowing organza ribbon and tie big pretty bows on the back of each chair. It would be pretty, but not too formal.

I think its much nicer to have the coverings than just the chairs.

The chair covers and overlays are VERY formal. I would do the before picture. It will fit a more casual reception. The other will look very out of place. Your father is right.

imo, chair covers are just a waste of money. yes, they look beautiful and fancy and all that, but in the end, people aren't really keeping track of things like that. it does kick the formality level up a notch, and if you're not doing anything fancy for your wedding, then the chair covers will be out of place and unexpected. save your dad the money and just go for nice centerpieces (people will notice those).

I think that so many of us during holidays think of those empty chairs, Sue. It is hard for me not to think of them as both my parents died on Christmas morning 5 years a part. I guess as we go through life there will always be those empty chairs and special places in our hearts for those who are no longer here with us on earth. And yes, sometimes we do indeed feel the loss of those who once sat in those chairs and were part of our life. But the memories do live on, although they sometimes hurt..Today I shared Thanksgiving with friends who lost a mother, brother and a baby within the last 6 months. But in spite of this there was sincere thankfulness for having been a part of each of their lives. Hugs to you and yours..
