Question:
'Fake' Diamond engagement ring?
2010-04-25 20:50:25 UTC
My boyfriend and i cannot afford a 'great' engagement ring and out jeweler said that an option for us is a 'fake' diamond.. she used another name for it and now we cannot remember what is was. We want to know so we can do some more research on it. We would hate for it to turn out to be a horrible mistake that we went the route of purchasing this 'fake' diamond. FYI: She DID NOT call it a 'Cubic Zirconia'. Anyone know another name(s) for a 'fake' diamond?? Please help. Thank you all! :)

There are many names for a ‘fake diamond’. Synthetic or lab created or man made would be other names. The company that sells man made diamonds would be http://www.asha.com or http://www.mossanite.com. Try them out. These will be reasonably priced as well.

Good Luck!

Okay, there are many colorless stones and none of them are "fake diamonds", they're just colorless stones with chemical compositions different from diamonds. Don't feel guilty about purchasing something you can afford and not succumbing to the belief that you have to pay the diamond industry's uber-inflated prices for a small stone whose mining wreaks havoc on environments and human communities. Your engagement ring does not need to contain a diamond to be "great", by any stretch of the imagination! If it's beautiful and it means a lot to you, then it's great. Period.

There are lots of alternatives to diamonds for those who would like a colorless stone. My favorite is Moissanite, whose clarity and refraction make it more beautiful than all but the most perfect of diamonds. There are also white sapphires and other diamond simulants like those sold at Diamond Nexus. Do you remember any of the qualities of this stone?

I don't believe in fake diamonds. Each diamond simulant is its very own very real thing. Cubic zirconia is real cubic zirconia. White sapphire is real white sapphire. I suppose either could be called a fake diamond if you tried to pass it off as a diamond.

Was your jeweller discussing moissanite with you? Moissanite is not even a diamond simulant, let alone a fake diamond. It is its own unique gemstone with very different properties from a diamond, the fire and brilliance varies greatly and they are cut differently.

My guess would also be Moissanite. It is lab created but it usually comes with a warranty to never lose it's brilliance, something a diamond can't promise. Also, they are almost as hard as a diamond and even more pretty usually! They are much better priced and they don't look fake like CZ usually does. You can check out a collection of Moissanite engagement rings at http://store.jewelryninja.com/store/Search.aspx?searchTerms=moissanite%20ring&submit=true&type=AND Best of luck in your search!

wow, someone would have to be shallower then hell to not, a ring is only the symbol of 2 ppl spending the rest of there life together. & more then likely the person gicing it cant afford anything better but they want the commitment & usually they get a better one they believe there partner deserves i bought my husband a pricy 6 diamond band when we got married.... i didnt get my ring till 8 months later almost because he wanted to get me what i deserved, but i would have been happy having any lil band the ring doesnt stop an arguement or bring you closer together, the only real value is giving it to your kids when your way older or pawning it if you get divorced & who would really know the difference of a fake & real diamond by just looking at it anyways? its a loving gesture, nothing less

You can do massonite or you could just do an alternative stone like an opal or saphire (really anything you like). A lot of controversy surrounds diamonds (even after the clean diamond trade act) unless you get one certified clean and even then you never really know. At least this way you can always know that at least it wasn't financing a warlord. (A much better way to look at things than being unable to afford it).
