Question:
How can I find a recreation of Grace Kelly's blue dress in To Catch a Thief?

I want it in some variation of chocolate brown with copper as the secondary color or vice versa. Or maybe even with some light pink as the secondary color. I need several of them, for the bridesmaids in my wedding:)

Here's the links for the dress:

If I go to a dressmaker, I really don't want to spend more than $120 per dress.

Finally got the link to work. Love the blue dress she wore at dinner, but really love the white dress that she wore in the hotel room with Cary Grant, taunting him about her jewels. Both have a wrapped bodice.

I got as far as David's Bridal on my search, they have several gowns with gathered or wrapped bodices.

to see the white one, same site, go to the picture that says Grace Kelly, 50's 460 views.

Otherwise, take a picture of the dress to a very good seamstress/designer who might could recreate the dress. Depends on the fabric that was used, too. Might not be available now. And it may cost you way more than $120 to have it re-created. Just the voile alone can be $10 a yard, and there are many layers of material in that dress.

You would need to take a picture and/or the youtube video to a seamstress and get an estimate. Be prepared however...chances are they are going to charge 2-3 times your budget for a custom made ballgown.

Start asking friends and family members if they know anyone who is a seamstress. Maybe if it's someone you know, they will do it for the cost of the materials, perhaps as a wedding gift to you.

you are most likely going to need a seamstress to do this for you. if i were you, i would ask a few seamstresses to give you their best price for doing up these dresses...tell them how many it will be and ask if they can copy the style exactly.

you may be able to find the pattern in vintage pattern catalogues or on a vintage pattern website. also, there may be a place where the pattern for the actual dress is catalogued since movie costume designers' work is often preserved, a google search for who the costume designer was for that movie may yield you more information...if it was someone famous like edith head or something, then it will be more likely that the actual dress pattern is around somewhere.

I agree - $120 a dress will be hard to find off the rack let alone custom made.

These dresses have a similar feel. I don't know how much they are though.

This isn't really similar but it's in brown with flowy material and it's only $105.

Your best bet is a dressmaker. See how much they will charge you.

The problem is that for $120 it will be hard to find ANY evening dress... let alone a replica of that one. The best thing I can think of is for you to maybe find a similar dress.. and either have it altered or alter it yourself. You may be able to find a similar strapless dress and buy some extra material to create the one flowy strap. Hope I helped a little.

Very gorgeous dress! I would try Shiny Orb, a comparison shopping site for bridesmaid dresses. There are thousands of dresses there and you can narrow them down by style. Looks like floor-length, straight neckline, a wide strap.... I would browse there. Hopefully you can find it!
