Hi. I agree with oy vey. What do you want to know?

I live in upper Michigan myself and have been to Mackinac Island a few times. Yes, it may be expensive getting there (ferry ride), but it is very different. No cars, etc.

There are many places to get married on the Island if that is what you want to know. However, be warned that the Little Stone Church on the island books up very, very fast. I think it may be booked more than a year in advance. There are also some parks that you can get married on....bed and breakfasts...and, then, of course, the Grand Hotel, which is magnificent!

If you have not been to the island, check it out FIRST before you think of booking a wedding on the island. Obviously, the weather is a big factor. With it being an island, and in upper Michigan, it's NOT that warm/hot, although summer temps can get up to about 80 or so. DO NOT try to plan anything outside in the fall....it's very unpredictable and could be raining tons.

That's about it! You can also contact the Mackinac Island Chamber of Commerce for additional information, or look online.

Mackinac Island is an island in Lake Huron, east of the Mackinaw Bridge. It has a lot of history, most notably the War of 1812 as it was controlled by both Americans and British. There is a historic Fort and cemetery there. It is fairly small, there is a trail for walking or biking all the way around that is about 7 miles. there is some beautiful natural history, ie Arch Rock as well. The movie Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour was filmed at the Grand Hotel. It is very large, very expensive and very formal. There are other places to stay on the island though, hotels, Bed and Breakfasts, etc. The downtown area has some great pubs and a lot of souvinier type shops, especially Fudge- thats kind of the signature thing - Mackinaw island Fudge. Transportation on the island is limited to walking. biking or horse carriage. You can rent bikes cheaply at most of the hotels. Are you used to cooler weather Michigan style? October, depending, might be too cold for you. The ferries stop running about a week before Halloween. You can take an airplane in the winter, or a snowmobile when the lake freezes. I have not been there in winter, but I hear it is pretty nice because only a few places are open, a few people are there and you see the same people at dinners etc. and get to know them. The ferries leave from St.Ignace in the UP or Mackinac City in the LP. Both of which you get to by taking I-75 North. Mackinac City has a lot of nice cabins and Band B's and also some more history - Forts, Lighthouse. You should also head into the UP and see Tahquemenon Falls and whitefish point. They are not too far from the bridge. The Falls are gorgeous and there is a nice brewery at the lower falls. Whitefish Point has a Shipwreck museum. I would definitely recommend going up there, I have been many times, I was there in October this past year and it was in peak fall color. Amazing. I have a lot of personal photos of the area if you would like to see them just email me. Make sure to have some Fudge, some Whitefish and some Pasties while you are there. Oh and some Cherry Wine. Gotta have the full taste of Michigan. :)

It is phenomenal...one of my favorite places.

Edit: I totally disagree with the comment below. Sure there may be a Starbucks on the island but there is nothing like waking up in the morning with the breeze blowing into your room and the sound of hoof beats outside. If you haven't actually stayed on the island then you are missing a ton!

Many hotels will provide discounted ferry tickets with your hotel room. AAA offers discounts as well. If you are dead seat on seeing the Grand Hotel (of which I'm not a fan) then the best bet is to do a high tea on the porch instead of just paying the $15 to walk on the porch.

There are many other wonderful small hotels and bed and breakfasts on the island. I've stayed at several of both and had nothing but wonderful experiences. The best time on the island is the night when all those staying in the city (ho-hum) have left and you can go explore.

I've seen the Northern Lights from the side of the island behind Mission Point at night and ridden horse-back through tons of trails on the island.

There really is no experience the same as staying on the island and finding out from the locals some of the secret spots to check out.

I had my honeymoon there. Mackinac city is great but avoid the island. They have a starbucks on the island now. My husband and I went to the island to avoid things we see everyday at home. it's also $50 a person to go to the island, and $15 to stand on the porch or enter the grand hotel. The city is wonderful, and the hotels have friendly and knowledgeable staff. I loved the city better.
