Went engagement ring shopping and fell in love with the Celebration Diamond at Gordons. Then went to Zales and the associate takes me directly to the Celebration Diamond, which she states is exclusive to Zales. Exact same sales pitch at both places, but who should I trust and who should I purchase from?

I looked on the Zales website to learn more about the Celebration Diamond. It says they are all round or princess cuts, GIA-rated, with color grade of I or higher, and clarity grade of SI2 or higher.

So, I plugged that information into a diamond search engine (I used Diamond Price Guru, but there are several out there), and I picked "round" and "1-carat," since you didn't specify the shape or size you like. I also specified I want a "very good" cut grade or higher. It came back with 3,661 matches at a dozen different stores, prices starting at $2,562.

So, I would ask for the exact specs of the diamond you like best, plug it into a diamond search engine, and see if the price makes sense. I've heard excellent things about both Zales and Gordons, but diamonds really are a commodity item--the same stone is frequently available elsewhere at a better price.

I hope this helps.

Zales is awesome! My ring is from Zales and I have a diamond and gold warranty. If my diamond ever falls out they replace it for nothing. I bring it in every 6 months to get it checked. I have white gold and sometimes they can get blah after a while so if it ever looks not up to par they replace it. Every time I go in the mall I drop by and get my ring cleaned too. I have nothing but good things to say about them!

Gordons. Bailey banks and Biddle, Gordon's and Zales are the same company. The high end chain is baily, middle is gordon's, zales is the low end.

You should really shop around to non-chain stores. Find independent dealers, you will get a better quality diamond for a better price. I personally wouldn't buy it from either but if you just love it, then get the one that's the better deal. Research diamonds and go by the four C's.

Stay away from the mall jewelrs. Engagement rings cost 30%-40% more at the mall! Try one of the reputable online jewelers like http://www.jamesallen.com/ or http://www.bluenile.com. They both have very good quality diamonds and rings, very competitive prices with a 30 day return policy. On James Allen you can also see ACTUAL photos of the diamonds before you make your purchase and they have the largest collection of Hearts & Arrows diamonds (super ideal cut diamonds)

You should research diamonds on www.bluenile.com and www.pricescope.com.

You can get a quality diamond anywhere-if you know what you are looking for...
