I would send them out in January. Any earlier, and you risk them getting lost in the shuffle of the holidays. By January your guests will have a 2009 calendar to write the date on :).
That said, there's no reason you have to send them out that early, unless the majority of your guests are traveling in and will need plane tickets or hotel rooms.

With your date of Sept 2009. Sending a little card with this years Christmas Cards would be ideal.
The information on the STD should include names/date/city. It can be as informal or formal as you wish. From a hand written note to a small printed card done by a printer, formatted to the likes of your wedding inspiration. (ie: you've picked a theme or colors, etc)
I used postcards, that I formatted myself on Vistaprint. com. They were VERY frugal. like $12 total. 50 of them were free, and I paid for the other 50.
Congrats!

we got married in march and sent out save the date cards in September or early October. I dont think you want to send them too soon, a few months before you send out invites is good
there are places on the net you can buy save the date cards or you can make them, they can get a little pricey if you buy them in the internet. It cost us probably about $20, we got business cards in Ivory, put a nice background on the card, and added magnets to the back, this is how we did it...

Christmas is a great time. You can save stamps that way if you're a regular card sender during the Holidays. I sent my Save-the-Dates during Christmas, along with a Christmas letter. Christmas letter I do every year. So, it actually saved me stamps for later in the year because you'll have to send out the invites as well. It's also a nice Christmas annoucement as well.

I'm getting marrie d sept. 20, 2008 and i sent my save the dates out at the end of February. Traditionally 6-7 months ahead for save the date, 2 1/2 months ahead for invitations. You can get real inexpensive ones made up at stationary stores, we got ours at Papyrus ( i thnkthey are a national chain). we paid $80 for 100 of them and they were pretty fancy, theyhad cheaper ones for around $65. If you want ot check some out online try:
myjeanm.com or exclusiveweddings.com.
they both have good selections and are pretty cheap. Congrats, great time of year to get married!!!!!!!!!!!

6 months to a year is appropriate for sending Save-the-Dates. It depends on the type of wedding and how many people are travelling. If travel is costly, such as for a destination wedding, then you may want to give more time for them to save or to prepare them for a deposit if you ware working with a travel agent on a package deal.

You will get all sorts of answers on this... and the books will tell you something different.
It really depends on your situation...if there is anything that might mean you should get them out sooner than usual. For example, we live in a college town... if there is a home football game the weekend of our wedding, there will be NO hotel rooms remaining. The football schedule comes out in January of each year, so I can't wait to get the schedule before picking a date. We're sending our 'save the dates' a year in advance and telling people to book hotels rooms as early as they can.
You might have to send them extra early if you have a large number of out of town guests? It really depends on your situation. :)
As far as the way to send the save the date. There are all sorts of ideas out there. We are sending them on magnets so people will have them on their refrigerator and not in a drawer. You can use this site to get ideas:
