Question:
Will people think our wedding song is cheesy? Should I care?

No official wedding song discussion yet, but we have been together for almost 7 years and our songis NSync's "This I promise you." ( I know, I know...but in our defense, we started dating when we were 17!) That is pretty much the only song we think of as our special song. But how corny will people think it is if that is our wedding song?

Should we use the song because it really means something to us and has been our song for so long, or should we start searching for a new song that might seem more "acceptable"? I know it's our wedding and we shouldn't care what people think, but I also don't want everyone to make fun of us! What do you think?

Your defense is so cute!!!!!

I say, go for it. Chances are most people at the wedding will remember the song and remember how cute they were in HS. Totally adorable and not cheesy at all.

It will be refreshing and fun and a breeze of fresh air after hearing the tired standard wedding songs over and over again: At last, butterfly kisses, From this moment on etc. etc,. etc. that is played on every single wedding.

Go for it and enjoy!!! It's not corny at all, it's so SOOOO cute!!!!!

Congrats

I really don't think people would make fun of you. I mean, this is your friends and family, right? Not strangers. If that is what you think of as your special song, then use it. Anybody who makes a comment about it won't say it to your face anyway, so who cares? When the married couple is dancing together for the first time, the audience is pretty much focused on the couple and the love between them, not the actual song they picked. Good luck!
2007-11-14 12:58:52 UTC
Can I just say that that if I heard someone play that song at there wedding I would smile/laugh--and I really mean that in a good way. I hate how people go with the trendiest song out at the time of their wedding, instead of playing something with meaning. It's your wedding, that is your song, and there is nothing unacceptable about it.

Plus, everyone could use some boy band music every now and then!
reginachick22
2007-11-14 14:38:47 UTC
Well, will you look back in 20 years and say:"Man that's a cheesy song, what was I thinking!"?

If no, go for it!

If yes, reconsider.

Do remember that a song by a boy band IS somewhat juvenile. It is up to you if you want to focus on your past or your future. I can't say if people will make fun of you for your song choice (likely not), but you might want to consider your options.

In the end, it likely won't matter much. In fact, I cannot recall ONE single First Dance song for any wedding I've attended. So do what you want, but make sure you won't regret your choice. Once you do it, it's done.

Are you really sure you are ready for marriage? I mean, what song you consider to be "your song" seems pretty unimportant in the overall scheme of things.

I would advise you to focus more of your attention on the marriage rather than the event of the wedding. It will be over so fast that your head will spin. I can hardly remember my wedding - it went so fast. We went through so much stress for what turned out to be meaningless things; matches, napkins, invitations, music, food, cake styles, dress, flowers and the like. Even if you pick the best song ever, and everyone thinks you are so very cool because of it, it will not make your marriage good or bad.

A month after the wedding, nobody will remember what song was "your song." Pick what you like and move on.

Who cares what other people think. It's your wedding. I recently got married and our song was either gonna be an NSync song or a Jonas brother song and we picked "When I look you in the eyes" Jonas brothers. And It was amazing.... when we were announced we came into SexyBack and It was a hit... people wanna have fun at weddings, we went with 50% Traditional and 50% our style. ..... I was amazing. Do what makes you two happy .. If that is YOUR song, then you choice is made... Nsync it is :)

Congrats!!!

I swear I'm going to use that song by Savage Garden where it's all "I knew I loved you before I met you..." because I feel like I loved him from the moment I laid eyes on him. And there was never any question of not getting married. We're the Dharma & Greg type...(to a point). Use the song. No one will remember, or care for more than 30 seconds. Besides, you'll be dancing..and that's something they MAY make fun of you for. So just have fun and listen to your song, and dance danceee.....

Like you said, you shouldn't really care what people think. It's your wedding, and it's a song that means something to you and your fiance.

My wife and I were married 7 years ago and we chose a song from the late 50's early 60's because when we heard the song it really meant something to us and has become our "Song". Now whenever we hear that song, we remember our wedding day.

Choose the song that means something to you, and don't worry about what people think. It's your day, not thiers.

Congrats!

It is your day - do what is special for the two of you. It is cute to have a old retro song from your teen years.

My hubby and I only dated a few months before we were engaged in that time we never had "a song" The night we were in engaged we went to dinner at a tiny local restaurant - there was this really bad Italian Lounge Singer we pretty much tuned him out until he started singing Elton's John's "Your Song" in really bad elevator music style.... whenever we hear the real song we would laugh - so we picked it for our song.

Who cares what anyone else thinks!!!! I doubt they will say anything and if they do, what kind of person does that sort of thing?!?

It's your wedding and it should be a song that is important to the two of you. Almost all wedding songs are corny. I hate country, but our song was Amazed by Lonestar, because it was special to us.
2007-11-14 13:17:45 UTC
I understand your worries about people thinking it's cheesy, I know its your day and you shouldnt care but I think sometimes it's hard to follow through with that concept, at least for me!

I would sugeest having the dj say "Now for their first dance as a married couple, the couple will dance to a song from when they first fell in love 7 years ago!" I think it will put it in perspective for everyone and make it even more special and romantic! Good luck!

If thats the song that means something to the both of you use it. Its your wedding your memories don't go around always worrying about what other people will think. Its about you 2 and your love for each other.

Use your song. Every one has that song that gets outdated but if it means something to you then use it! and when you have that first dance it will be way more special than using a song you think appeals to everyone else. Besides its not a bad song and timeless in the love that its lyrics talks about.

By all means, use the song. Its your wedding. And it's even more special because it means something to you. Its not just another "pretty song". By the way, congratulations! I wish you both all the best.

that is so sweet!! when it comes to weddings it doesnt matter how old the song is. It also doesnt matter what people think...thats a great song!! a new song is just simply not going to do it!! It wont mean anything to you guys. Just stick with this i promise you!

I think your song will be fine. It doesn't matter if it is corny or not, it's romantic and sweet. Use it. It is good because it means something to you.

Only songs that are offensive, or overly sexual, or have profanity, are ones I would say don't use. And Butterfly Kisses for the daddy/daughter dance, because I hate that song.

Ours was Love and Marriage the theme song from Married with Children- We got a few chuckles but that was it!

I think it's a great orginal song!!

I don't think any one will think its cheesy, if anything before the DJ plays it have him put in an anouncement about why that is your wedding song (i.e. first dance, first kiss, or whatever reason). And to make you feel better I believe my ex and I had you beat on the cheesy song try: Savage Garden "I knew I loved you".
dingding
2007-11-15 11:24:28 UTC
Just have your DJ introduce it with something like, "OK, it's time for the bride and groom's first dance...this one should bring back memories - it was a hot song when they met 7 years ago and it means a lot to them..." That should take care of any major giggling.

Who cares what other people think. The truth of the matter is it is the words and meaning in and behind the song. You could come down the aisle to YMCA it is no one's business or no one's day but you two. Forget them! Congrats.

Look.....

I'd do what means the most to you.

It doesn't matter what you do for your wedding, there will be something you do that will go wrong, or that won't meet someone's expectations, etc. To sort of steal an old saying & tweak it a bit, "You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time".

NSyc it is!

Best of life to you!
2007-11-14 13:00:43 UTC
definately go for the song that reminds you the most of your best times together, the song that makes you feel the most loved up.

I think everyone will love the song because they will see how much it makes you smile and shine and how much it means to you, they will be watching you not listening intensely to the song.

Have a fabulous day!! :)

The point of the first dance song is for it to have importance to the bride and groom. My husband and I chose our song from the first concert that we went to together. Josh Groban - You Are Loved. If your song means something to you then that is what is important.
