Question:
What ring do you think would look good on my finger? (pic of left hand included).?

I'm having a renewal of vows for my 10th wedding anniversary (2011). My husband is suppose to deploy to Bahrain sometime between Nov of 2009 to Mar of 2010. He is going to have a new wedding and engagement ring made while he is in Bahrain. The new ring will be made with platinum and diamonds.

About me: I have an active lifestyle. I have two kids ages 6 & 4. And I am pregnant with boy/girl twins. I do medical billing/coding from home. And when I'm not pregnant, I work part-time at Golds Gym as a personal trainer. I don't keep my finger nails long, because I have a very busy life. I don't have time for artificial nails either. I've always had really big hands, and I wear a size 8 1/2 to 9, depending on the style of the ring (and the time of the month.. LOL).

Here's my problem: I can't seem to decide what ring design I really like. I do know that I don't like a high setting, because I've scratched my kids with another ring I use to wear. I'm also allergic to the nickle found in silver, white/yellow gold. My only requirement is that the ring design have a low setting.

Can anyone help me? Please be tactful.

I would say an emerald or an oval cut. Your fingers are a bit thicker and I think they would elongate your fingers.

Honestly, though, the best way to try is to go to a jeweler and try stuff on.

I suggest a delicate band with details... I know someone who has similar hands to yours, and a band that has a heart design encrusted with diamonds made a gorgeous addition. It stays down low, which is good for her, as a full-time mom.

As an example, I'll show you a few styles Wal Mart has, because I know they do low-set rings a lot. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6371682 or http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10340652 .... actually, my placeholder wedding ring until the big ceremony is here... http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10378802

Of course, you'll want to look for something with a material that won't kill you, like a tungsten. Tungsten is so incredibly durable! I've got friends who've been deployed to Iraq and come back without a scratch on their tungsten ring. I'd go to a local jeweler and tell them what you're looking for, so they can show you what they have. :)

your hands resemble my sister's hands, and mine... though i wear about a 7 on my ring finger. i too do not bother with artificial nails or keeping my nails long. i cut my nails off and just try to keep them clean and not sharp so i don't scratch anyone. high settings really bother me as well, as i have also scratched people with a higher setting. so hopefully i can give you some good advice.

one thing i noticed when i was trying on rings was that the thinner bands tended to make my fingers look more like a sausage with a string tied around it, so a slightly thicker band is much more flattering. rings between 4-6mm wide looked best, but since your hands are slightly bigger, you might even go as wide as 7 or 8mm. my advice on that is to go and try on plain bands that are different widths until you find what width you feel flatters your hand the most.

as for the setting, try a channel set or even a punch set. it's virtually flat, but still looks elegant.

here's a picture of a ring similar to what mine looks like:

mine is white gold, and more streamlined, but it's the same idea.

this one is also quite stunning, but very low-profile.

you also might try a tension set ring - although those cannot be resized - in titanium or tungsten. i have a stainless steel ring with a small cubic zirconia that i got at a craft fair that has an "s" shaped vertical cut-out, and in the center, the zircon is tension set. something like that might also look good.

good luck!

I suggest what I have. I have very similar hands, and prefer a low setting. I have an emerald solitaire. It elongates and slims the fingers. It sits low, looks large, and is 30 percent less expensive than a round diamond of similar clarity, cut and color. Also, one of the best values is to get an undersized 1ct (7/8ths) which is .83-.94, it will look like a full carat, but not cost it. Especially because I picked ones with a large table, and shallow depth within parameters. And you aren't losing weight in a very thick girdle. Also picked ones in the 3/4ct range (.69-.82)

Mine is set in a 2.5mm platinum setting.

this is what mine looks like

here are some good suggestions. I wanted to keep the depth under 3mm, and the length width ratio betw 1.3-1.4

the 1.3 will be more square like, the 1.4 will be more rectangular

I totally disagree with Lippy, you do not want a thick band, you want a thin band. As you know there is a big difference between a size 7 and a size 9. A size 9 is my ring finger, a 7 is my pinky finger. Alot of things look good on the pinky, not so much in the size 9. I love the look of the asscher shaped diamond, but its a deep diamond, looks smaller than it is, is one of the more expensive shapes, and is totally wrong being square for my hands, very unflattering. It's the same deal for me with shoes, love the look of the sample size 7, but in the size I wear, 11wide, not so cute much of the time.

For the wedding band, this is what I am considering for our 10th

Have you seen those "halo" settings? That might be something you'd like. Or...a channel set center stone. That's a pretty modern look...

So are you getting a full new set with engagement ring and wedding band, or is this another band to wear with what you already have - you contradict yourself in your explanation.

Just go with simple and classic. -

For an anniversary band - my husband got me a chevron one to go with my wedding set. An idea for you -
