Question:
DIY Wedding favor -- will it work?
2009-11-06 20:15:47 UTC
I'm having a Christmas themed wedding and was thinking about doing personalized ornaments for the favors.

However, those are pretty pricey. I was thinking about getting red ornaments. Getting a stencil of the logo I've used on all of our stationery (it's a really pretty swirly design of a Christmas tree) and a stencil with our names and wedding date. On one side of the ornament, I would spray paint our tree logo with white paint and our names and wedding date on the other side.

I'm trying to think of any problems that may occur with this before I go buy all the supplies. Any ideas?

no one wants a gift with your wedding date on it except for you. trust me, the ornaments are a cute idea and with the swirly thing sure but leave off your date.

Lets be honest, if you were attending your wedding as a guest would you want a personalized ornament with someone elses wedding junk on it. I know I wouldnt. Chances are, alot of your guests are going to leave these behind and you will have wasted alot of time and money for nothing.

If you insist on giving ornaments (honestly, its VERY overdone for holiday weddings), then I would suggest just spray painting the tree onto the ornament and give that as the favor. Your guests can still display it on their christmas tree without having it say "Jim and Suzie 12-23-09" or whatever.

You could set up a artificial tree somewhere in your reception hall and hang the ornaments on the tree. Just decorate it with white lights and maybe some tinsel. Then your guests can just grab one on the way out.

The others are right, it is hard to work with a round shiny ornament. Yes, they are fragile and breakable, for you will making them transporting them to the wedding, and for the guest trying to get them home. And yes, not everyone treasures objects with names and dates on it. And you will want to buy extra ones to practice with. And please, do not resort to painting the info on with glue, and applying glitter to that. Way too grade school.

Consider just buying a ornament without the dates and names. I bought a set of 3 silver plate hearts with ribbons on them for a very reasonable price, probably did not cost much more than the price you will pay for all the stencils and paint. Angels, stars, hearts, snowflakes, any symbol of Xmas would be appropriate. Bluebirds are the symbol of happiness, cardinals a symbol of a marriage, they mate for life, as do some other birds. Swans are a traditional wedding symbol, too. All available at Xmas for ornaments. And they are all on my tree, I collect ornaments.

A friend bought some clear craft glass ornaments, and pours paint in them and swirls it around. You could do that in your wedding colors. Stuffing some with glitter or confetti or tissue paper strips a good idea, and inexpensive.

I saw wedding cookie cutters given as a favor. might want to consider that. they can be hung on a tree as an ornament, too.

I think you will find that spray painting the ornaments will be difficult with the way the factory finish is already applied. You may end up wasting money for the supplies on a project you will become frustrated with in the end.

If you are positive that you want to use ornaments try using a clear ornament. They are available for a very reasonable price at any Hobby Lobby. I would suggest filling them with colored raffia of your choice and then using a paint pen to apply what you want on the outside of the ornament.

If you really wanted to impress your guests, print your logo and information on to a piece of tissue paper or velum then decoupage it to the inside of the ornament and fill with colored raffia.

Good Luck and Best Wishes for your wedding.

I understand the theme idea and the ornament sounds like a nice gesture however each guest may not want something so personalized, you should get something that they can use but the personalization can be removed maybe? And ornaments are fragile, probably not a great idea to have with any small children around, they get rough after a long day and could be hurt by broken glass.

Its just my opinion but I thank something like that should be a personal gift to those with a thank you note that helped with the wedding and maybe a more simple small frame or other item be left as keep skates on the table, that is just my opinion, I think your hard work and effort would not be fully appreciated by each guest and that most would be discarded.

I think that's a cute idea. However, it may turn out to be a lot of work. To save time, maybe you can stencil only your logo on the ornament. Then, you can have a tag with your names, date and logo tied around the box. Or if you had lots of time on your hands, you can use the ornaments as place cards and stencil your logo along with the names of each guest with a paint pen. This can also count as your favors as well, which may compensate for the high cost.

I've done stencils/spray on oddly shaped objects (a round ornament will surely give you trouble) and it is sort of difficult. I would reccomend doing a trial run first and seeing how it comes out.

I would instead reccomend using a paint marker on the ornaments. Color over the stencil with the paint marker should be easier and more efficient.

Sounds good! Try Oriental Trading Company for ornaments. They are usually awesome at huge bulk deals. Also, get some type of sealant for the ornaments. You don't want to paint to chip (a clear coat in spray paint is all you need).

Have fun!

Hi....I LOVE the idea with the ornament except.....

Please do not put your name and wedding date on it. Really....other than immediate family, no one wants to hang that on their tree. Instead, do the stencil with the tree logo on BOTH sides. I am not trying to be mean, but I would not hang an ornament on my tree with someone else's names and wedding date on it. Make it more generic and it will be a hit!

PS - I did receive a plain snowflake ornament as a favor one year at a New Year's Eve wedding and, to this day, I still hang it on my tree and remember...."oh...this was from Tim's wedding."

If you want to go even cheaper than doing the stencils, why not get simple plain snowflake ornaments from Oriental Trading Company.....put them all on a decorated tree....and instruct your guests to please take one as they leave!

In my opinion, Holidays are the wrong days to pick a wedding. If something goes wrong with the wedding, you'll remember your wedding date forever. But, if you think your love is match made in heaven, then go ahead and do what you think is best. Then, Christmas would be a wonderful day to pick for a wedding.
