What colors to wear to a wedding? (I'm a guest)?

So my cousins wedding is in April, and my family has been invited to attend the wedding. What color dress should I wear to the wedding? Weddings are usually a bright and happy celebration so I was thinking a pastel pink or light blue or something like that. Any suggestions? And what type of dress is best for weddings? I think it has to be formal.

If you know they bride's color choices for the wedding party, try not to match that color, but it is okay, for example, to wear pink if her color is pink -- just not the exact shade. Any pastel color or floral would be find. Make sure you know where the wedding is being held, time of day and if it is formal. If the wedding is in a church, be respectful in the length of the skirt and the shoulders and neckline -- you may want to have a jacket or shrug to wear during the service if you select a spaghetti strap or strapless dress. This is not the time to dress like you trying to pick up guy in a bar or attend a prom. Classy, elegant, tasteful, fun.

Avoid white, but other than that wear what you want, as long as it fits the formality of the occasion and it's presentable (no boobs or butt hanging out).



Cocktail dresses are generally suitable for weddings, except for very casual weddings - for a casual wedding, wear a sundress, or the kind of dress you can buy in Target or Kohl's, perhaps paired with a pashmina wrap or a cardigan sweater.



You would only "need" a long formal gown if the wedding was VERY fancy - meaning, white tie (male guests all in tuxedos). For a wedding where men are in a mix of tuxes and nice suits, a nice cocktail dress will be fine.



The Ann Taylor website has some nice dresses in their Weddings and Parties line. Look there for ideas or to purchase something. Also, look around in a department store like Macy's or Nordstrom.



The color of your dress does not need to reflect the mood and it doesn't need to match the color scheme.

You should look for a fairly modest sheath or skater dress, nothing too short, tight or that has cutouts. It's a church occasion and everyone's eyes should be on the bride, not you...it's hard to find something nice, because there are so many kind of sleazy dresses - but hopefully here are a few possibilities:
