We can only go to New Zealand for our Honeymoon in '09 either in August or December-January. In August it is cold, and December-January it is super expensive. When do you guys think we should go?

Noooo don't come in August if you can come in Dec-Jan. September is the start of spring... and it isn't exactly shorts weather. Last summer was awesome and sunny right up until May, so hopefully this one will be just as good. Please please don't spend all your time in Auckland, and going to the South Island is a must :) Hope you have a wicked time here!
Only South Island? What kind of activities are you guys planning to do here? There are plenty of wine trails, you can go skiing if you go in August. Make sure you check out the glaciers! At the top of the South Island gets some of the best weather with lovely beaches.. and whale watching in Kaikoura!

What part are you goin to? the south would be pretty cold in August which is ok if you are going to go for skiing or something like that, the North Island wouldn't be too bad in August but still a bit chilly depending on what climate you come from, preferably I would go in Dec-Jan, maybe early December before the NZ school holidays start.

Don't go in August all it does is rain constantly because it is smack in the middle of their winter and is soo cold and damp. I have a friend who moved there and he is hating the weather right now. The best time is either the start or end of summer. Summer starts around November and goes till about the end of April. So anytime between then would be good if you could book it then. The reason Dec/Jan is so expensive is its right in the middle of their summer and everyone has holidays then.
You will enjoy your trip way more if you go when it's warm because you can actually go and enjoy the beach and really thats one of the best parts it their beaches. When it rains in the winter is rains torrents so most people stay inside through the winter.

For your honeymoon I would suggest the South Island - great scenery, adventures etc As someone suggested to stay away from the big cities I would have to agree - it can become hectic, expensive and you just can't relax - It really depends on what you enjoy? If you want some sun and want to lay back and relax i suggest Gisborne or the Hawkes Bay - There are alot of places that can tickle your fancy - It depends on what you want to do on your honeymoon Just one thing, if you like to go tramping I suggest you have a guide with you - theres been a few tourist who have lost there lives while tramping by themselves - So be safe
